The Iron Deficiency Test is a blood test that measures the level of ferritin in your blood. Ferritin is a protein that stores iron and releases it when your body needs it. This test is used to assess your body's iron stores and help diagnose iron deficiency anaemia or other conditions related to abnormal iron levels.

Your body needs iron to make healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells contain a substance called haemoglobin, which transports oxygen around the body. Iron is also important for healthy muscles, bone marrow and organ function.
Anaemia is caused by lack of haemoglobin. Iron deficiency is caused by lack of iron. Iron deficiency with anaemia is caused by both a lack of iron and a lack of haemoglobin.
The amount of iron you need is:
• 8.7mg a day for men aged 19 and over
• 14.8mg a day for women aged 19 to 49
• 8.7mg a day for women aged 50 and over
Women having periods after the age of 50 may need the same amount of iron as women aged 19 to 49.
